Mohammed Hussein

Mohammed Hussein holds a master's degree in Economics of Public Policy Programs, from the Barcelona School of Economics. His research focuses on Iraq’s political economy and labor market. Over the past 3 years, he worked for German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval), providing research and data analysis on Iraq’s development challenges. He also conducted impact evaluation studies for various cash for work programs and reconstruction projects in the Iraq’s war-affected provinces such as Nineveh, Salahuddin, and Anbar. With the spread of COVID-19, he conducted a rapid assessment study to identify the economic implications of the pandemic in the Iraq’s labor market for GIZ and the Iraq’s Finance Ministry. He also recommended a set of policy actions for improving the national social-protection strategy to mitigate the impact of the pandemic by supporting those who lost livelihoods and fell under poverty line. Over the past 10 years, Mohammed’s articles appeared in American magazines such as Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy, analyzed foreign direct investment in Iraq’s economy, resource driven conflicts, and implications of ISIS-war. He also worked on labor market of armed groups in Iraq and published “ISIS Prisons: Where Labor Demand Meets Labor Supply,” Combat Terrorism Exchange, Volume 7,# 1, 2017. Since 2013, he has been working for Iraq Oil Report, New York based research and Information company, providing analytical articles on Iraq’s energy sector in addition to economic, political and security issues.
